Chaz Mostert admits the possibility of becoming only the second driver to score a Bathurst triple crown would be a ‘dream come true’.
The Tickford Racing Supercars ace has given himself a strong opportunity to achieve the impressive feat after he claimed a stunning pole position in the #37 BMW M6 GT3 for the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.
Mostert heads into today’s race having already won the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in 2014, the Bathurst 6 Hour in 2016, and is now looking to add the Bathurst 12 Hour to complete a rare Mount Panorama trifecta.
The only man to take out the Bathurst triple crown is Paul Morris who teamed up with Mostert to score a shock win at the Bathurst 1000.
Supercars veteran Morris won the Bathurst 12 Hour in 2007 when it was a production car race, before securing a triple crown last year with victory in the Bathurst 6 Hour.
“Paul (Morris) is the only one who has done it, so it would be cool to be part of that as well and give him a hip and shoulder and say that he is not the only one,” said Mostert when asked by Speedcafe.com.
“It would be a dream come true. Any time you win at Bathurst is unbelievable, and if we can win tomorrow – and it’s going to be a hard fight – it will probably be up there with the 1000.”
Mostert caught the attention of BMW at last year’s Bathurst 12 Hour after a starring role in a privately run M6 GT3 that saw him lead in the opening hour.
The drive earned him factory contract with BMW that has seen him contest the Asian Le Mans Series and the FIA GT World Cup in Macau, before joining the famous Schnitzer squad alongside BMW stars Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus.
Despite clearly showing his talent behind the wheel, Mostert says he is in awe of the company he is driving with.
“I’ve got two superstar team-mates; I don’t know why they trusted me with the car,” he said.
“They’re the talents and I’m just the Aussie bogan!
“It’s fantastic to take the reins of the car in the shootout and do the job for them.
“I didn’t think about the pressure too much, I just tried to think about getting the most out to the car.
“We need to have a clean race, no mistakes, and see how we pop out the other side.”
Mostert is currently lead opening hour of the Bathurst 12 Hour.
